What If . . . ? Gets Early 3rd Season Renewal, For All Mankind Will Venture Into 4th Season

Interrupting regularly scheduled Saturday programming for two more renewal announcements that have come out of Comic-Con, neither of which are much of a surprise.  Disney+ has announced that its animated alternate-universe series What If . . . ? will be returning for a third season ahead of its second-year bow.  That series performed well for the streaming service in its first season in Summer 2021 and offers an alternate take on the popular MCU characters while also drawing on stories from the comics.  The second season is set to arrive in early 2023.

What If . . . ? follows The Watcher as he looks in on the many realities across the multiverse which include alternate versions of the MCU characters.  The voice cast has included Benedict Cumberbatch, Hayley Atwell, Chadwick Boseman, Chris Hemsworth, and more.

The other announcement was already expected–and I predicted it could come during Comic-Con–as Apple TV+ has officially announced the fourth season of For All MankindProduction Weekly already had that listed as in progress, so the renewal certainly seemed like a sure thing.  This is currently one of the streamer’s most popular shows and it has been receiving plenty of good buzz from critics and fans plus some attention at awards time.  Apple TV+ has also been supportive of its originals and the show could continue for more seasons.

For All Mankind takes place in an alternate history where the Russians are the first to land on the Moon and the space race and rivalry between the U.S. and the Soviet Union continues for decades.  It stars Joel Kinnaman, Shantel VanSanten, Jodi Balfour, Sonya Walger, Krys Marshall, and Cynthy Wu and it was created by Ronald D. Moore.

The 2021-22 regular season has ended, but there are still quite a number of shows waiting for word on their fate (more on that at this link) plus several Summer entries.
