Riverdale to End with Seventh Season, No Word Yet on The Flash

Riverdale‘s upcoming seventh season will be its last which had been expected pretty much since the renewal was announced.  The CW has released its schedule for the 2022-23 season, and it indicated that the dark take on the Archie comics (which returns mid-year) will be wrapping up.  That show started off in 2017 as one of The CW’s more popular scripted series, performing particularly well in digital viewing, but its numbers have dropped off and it was one of the network’s lower-rated shows this past season.   It received its seventh-year renewal ahead of the blood bath of cancellations that occurred over the last few weeks, but the expectation was that would be its last, giving it the chance to wrap up its storylines (Legacies and Charmed were not given the same opportunity).

There has been no word yet on The Flash which is also considered to be heading into its last season.  Grant Gustin had previously worked out a deal to return for a ninth year, and the indication has been that the show will be wrapping up at that point.  After the cancellations of Legends of Tomorrow, Batwoman, and Naomi, the Arrow-verse franchise is now down to just The Flash, Superman & Lois, and Stargirl (which will be moving to the Fall schedule).  With The CW going through a potential sale, it is unclear if that franchise is on its last legs or if there will be any attempt to ramp it up in the coming years, perhaps with a Justice League series (which was teased during the Crisis on Infinite Earths event).  But the signs have been pointing towards The Flash wrapping up sooner rather than later, so stay tuned for a possible final season announcement for that one.  And in any case, I expect the writers will approach the upcoming year as potentially the show’s last.

Both Riverdale and The Flash will return at mid-season, likely in the January/February timeframe.
