Two rather surprising announcements dropped this afternoon and both are good news for lovers of supernatural dramedies.
Syfy released its 2022-23 schedule today and that includes the return of previously cancelled SurrealEstate. That show follows a real estate agency that specializes in houses that may be in need of a supernatural repossession. It’s first season aired to low ratings in Summer 2021 (in part because it received very little promotion) after which it was cancelled. The show was being shopped around and there was also a small but loyal fanbase stumping for it on the social networks. It is unclear if either of those efforts resulted in Syfy changing its decision on the cancellation, but the show will be returning in 2023. It stars Tim Rozon, Sarah Levy, Adam Korson, Maurice Dean Wint, and Savannah Basley, but there is no word yet on whether the full cast will be returning.
Not mentioned in the announcement was either Day of the Dead or Astrid & Lilly Save the World, both of which performed poorly in the ratings in the 2021-22 season. That does not bode well for their chances of returning next year.
Also receiving a second season renewal today is Starz’s supernatural dramedy Shining Vale. That show debuted in March to low ratings and I had it On the Bubble shortly after its premiere. The premium cable companies do not pay as much attention to the same-day ratings because they are not beholden to advertisers, and they factor in delayed viewing, digital viewing, and encore runs. But the fact that the network did not make any mention of the additional stats (which they usually do when the numbers are notable) suggests that overall viewership was not very high. The network also did not tout the viewership in the renewal announcement. But this series about a family that moves into a haunted house had some star power with Courtney Cox, Greg Kinnear, and Mira Sorvino attached. It also likely plays well to the network’s female-skewing audience. The second season will have eight episodes like the first and will air at some point in 2023.

SyFy has a dearth of original programming so if the sets were still around was probably easier to uncancel this to give them 13 more hours
