Description: We love to play games with our children. But what happens when someone else starts to play with them too? Someone we don’t know. Can’t see. Can’t hear. In The Whispers, someone or something — is manipulating the ones we love most to accomplish the unthinkable.  ABC.com

Why Was It Cancelled? The show seemed to have the odds against it before it even aired, as it was pushed from a mid-season start last year to a Summer run.  By all appearances, ABC had given up on it and was apparently dumping it off to Summer for a burn-off run.  But then a slight jolt to their plans occurred when the show bowed to very good numbers for that typically low-viewership time of year.  It sustained those for several weeks, but then its ratings started to taper off and by the time the show wrapped up in August it seemed surely on its way out.  The network had already let the actors’ contracts lapse at the end of June, and that appeared to put the show’s future in question.  And the fact that no word on its fate came as its season wrapped up seemed to assure that ABC was done with it which they finally confirmed with a late cancellation announcement.

  1. Aaaaaaaaaaand… this is the reason why normal or “old-fashioned” tv companies will die in a few years just like taxis will disappear as Uber, Lyft and such are taking cabs out of the streets. BECAUSE THEY STILL THINK AS IF THEY LIVE IN THE 20TH CENTURY!!!!
-People HATE advertising. DEAL WITH IT. That’s why Netflix and Hulu skyrocketed.
-People like to watch a tv series in a weekend, not wait forever to see what happens next. Another thing that Netflix has got right.
-DVR’s are EVERYWHERE. The thing people records the show and watch it later is now as common as Facebook. People like me actually records these kind of series until the end, AND THEN is when I watch them (only exception being Game of Thrones)
-Their stupid season finales always end in a cliffhanger. Aaaaaaaaaaand… then they cancel it. WE ARE SICK OF THAT 5HI7!!!!!

I hope ABC, CBS, NBC and all the “big” companies disappear in less than 10 years. I hate their stupid-a55 decisions. They deserve to be killed with fire.

  2. This show wasn’t bad – it felt a bit like an episode of “The Outer Limits” or “The Twilight Zone” stretched out into a television series, and it felt vaguely dated like something that would have played well as a made-for-television network miniseries back in the days of “V” or “Alien Nation”, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing.

Ultimately, I think a lack of support from the network killed this show, and, sadly, the fact that the economics of this sort of thing means that it generally makes more sense to fund an inexpensive “reality show” instead of something with a running story, a steady cast of characters, special effects and stunts, and that sort of thing, so one could imagine that the network really wasn’t trying too hard to chain itself to this series when overwhelming ratings failed to materialize.

  3. It’s such a shame. How they can cancel this great Sci-Fi series. They continue some TV series which are disaster and then they cease this one. They cannot understand differences of audiences. Sci-Fi movies are not for a couch potato who usually sleeps in front of TV even with out seeing it. Most of these TV series’ audiences watch it on DVR. because it’s a better way to watch a movie which is mysterious. But they cannot understand these kinds of facts.

  4. Are people running ABC friggin nuts? They Keep Fresh off the boat, a lame ass not funny, disgusting show – but cancel The Whispers?

Oh. I forgot. ABC is owned by Disney. That answers my question. And the answer is: Good show + good ratings = higher pay. Which means cheap bastards would rather cancel the show than pay their actors a decent salary!

  5. I love watching this show. Can it please cancel the cancellation of the series. I have become very interested in it. I watch it online and not on television. Imagine how many people there could be watching this series online. They should be thinking about the amount of people that could possibly be watching this online.

  6. I also like this show(The Whispers) But I did watch it every Monday night at exactly 10pm. It would be a real shame if it is cancelled. Channel 5 FOX cancelled GangRelated. Now ABC is canceling The Whispers.

  7. I, too, very much enjoy this show but DVR it and watch it on my schedule. Please reconsider and extend this very interesting and creative sci-fi drama for at least another season!!

  8. Great show. I also record this show and all my other shows. The stations need to get it everyone records their show and watch them on their time! Quit canceling shows unless you can count the people who record!

  9. “The Whispers” isn’t a bad series, its just the same old predictable scifi that network television has been making for years. The unnecessarily long drawn out storyline, cheesy cliches and what will no doubt be an annoying, unresolved cliff hanger, is the reason why the ratings are so low. I was hoping this series might get a second season, but that obviously isn’t going to happen.

    1. Actually it is far from that. I’m surprised that it was allowed to be aired seeing it was based on the Nazi Cult@ The Vril Society.

  10. Jellies is 100% correct. I was on vacation and have the last five episodes on DVR. I really like the episodes I’ve watched so far, but I came online to see if it’s been picked up or there’s no reason to watch the rest of them. Too bad, I was really looking forward to watching a good sci-fi series

  11. Ratings shouldn’t matter….at all. Most people watch tv shows on their DVR or On Demand or Netflix or online. Very few people actually watch live tv anymore. It is so much nicer to DVR a series and binge watch and skip commercials. I really like this show and would be very disappointed if it were cancelled.
