Why Was it Cancelled? This show’s ratings were notably down in its third year, but then it has gone up against stiff competition, particularly The Walking Dead, for much of the year.  But its fate was already in doubt because the third season had a delayed start and debuted in February of 2018 as opposed to the expected Fall 2017 bow.  Series star Bruce Campbell had previously made a comment that they might do a fourth film if the show was cancelled after its third season, but later retracted that saying that Ash was probably done if the show was cancelled.  Campbell did send out a final tweet thanking Starz for the opportunity to revisit the character:

Fans do have an online petition to keep the show going and will likely now start to lobby other networks to pick it up now that Starz has cancelled it. But since Campbell has claimed that he is officially retired as Ash, so it is unlikely we will see a continuation of the series or another movie.

  1. I’m glad to see this show did so well and got renewed – I found it to be a load of ghoulish fun! I loved all the recurring characters, Bruce Campbell is at his best here, the atmosphere was perfect, the old-fashioned practical effects were a great breath of fresh air, the story worked great, and the 30-minute episode, short season format worked perfectly for this show. I can’t think of a single complaint!

I wouldn’t mind seeing a similar revival of the “Phantasm” film series in a similar short-episode television format… it’s a shame that Angus Scrimm is gone (RIP, you’ll be missed!), but with the right cast and the original creators of the Phantasm series on board, I can see a “Phantasm” series working really well, especially if paired with “Ash vs. Evil Dead” with one show leading in to the other on the same night, or one show filling in for the other in alternating seasons.

In any case, I’m looking forward to the return of “Ash vs. Evil Dead”!
