Prime Time Sci Fi TV: Whether You Want It or Not, It’s Here: Sharknado 2 The Second One

New or notable science fiction and fantasy entries on the Prime Time TV schedule, also including programs that may be of interest to genre fans.  Air dates and times subject to change.

sharknado-2-movie-posterIt was just over a year ago that Syfy’s shark-infested cheese-fest Sharknado stirred up plenty of buzz on the social networks before debuting to okay but not eye-popping ratings.  But it drew enough attention for the network to greenlight a sequel and that hits on Wednesday with Sharknado 2: The Second One.  You pretty much know what to expect from this one, but if you can’t wait for it’s debut, you can catch the trailer at this link.  And if that isn’t enough cheesy shark sci fi for you, on Saturday Syfy also unleashes Sharktopus vs. Pteracuda (yes, you read that title correctly).  Roger Corman is attached to that one as producer and Robert Carradine stars, plus Conan O’Brien makes a brief appearance in the film (any guesses as to his fate?).  How can the Discovery Channel go forward with their Shark Week in August with these two stealing their thunder?

In other Prime Time Sci Fi TV news, NBC’s Crossbones (which is not really sci fi but has appeal to genre fans) wraps up its first season on Saturday as the network will air the show’s last two episodes back to back that night as a burn-off of sorts.  It’s not necessarily cancelled (more on that at this link), but likely will not be returning to NBC.  Also on Saturday, BBC America airs an encore run of History Channel’s The Great Martian War which re-imagines World War I as a conflict between humans and aliens.  And on Thursday, ABC’s new series The Quest has its debut which gives us a Game of Thrones-meets-reality-series hybrid.  May be worth checking out for fantasy fans.
