Cancellation Watch Breaking News: Humans Will Not Return for a Fourth Season

After a long wait, we have finally heard word on the fate on the AI-drama Humans which aired on AMC in the U.S. and on Channel 4 in the UK.  The show’s creators and writers Jonathan Brackley and Sam Vincent have confirmed that it will not be returning for a fourth season. Following is from a post they put out on social media:

Sadly, there won’t be a fourth season of Humans. In this age of unprecedented choice and competition, we can have no complaints. Channel 4 and AMC were the perfect partners. They supported the show brilliantly and above all – let us make three seasons. We’re gutted, of course, but we were so lucky. We got to make the show we wanted to make, for 24 episodes. The Humans cast and crew were and are the best and we wouldn’t have got a second season without their talent and dedication, let alone a third. We can’t name anyone without naming everyone, and that would mean we’d have to do this in an even smaller front – so here’s to every last actor, director, writer, producer, exec, commissioner, DoP, editor, composer, crew member and the unfailingly generous Swedish team behind the original version.

The two acknowledged that the show “left some threads hanging”, but claimed: “That was the way we always wrote the show. Maybe one day we’ll get a chance to pick them back up.” Humans debuted on AMC in 2015 to decent ratings and it was very successful in its inaugural run on Channel 4. The viewership declined over the next two seasons, but after the third year ended there were talks of bringing it back for a fourth season. But apparently nothing could be worked out and the eight-episode season that aired last Summer will now be its last.

Humans takes place in a near-future world where human-like robots known as “synths” have taken over many of the menial tasks for the general population. But a special group of synths discover they have a higher purpose which leads them into a direct confrontation with humans. It stars Manpreet Bachu, Emily Berrington, Ruth Bradley, Jack Derges, and Sope Dirisu. It aired for three seasons totaling twenty four episodes.

The regular season has ended, but there are still several shows that are awaiting renewal or cancellation announcements. Be sure to stay tuned to this site for breaking news and updates. 1. I love that show. Was hoping for another season and see how they would resurrect Mia. I knew AMC had no real say in the renewal, it was all about UK Channel 4. It is a real shame because the rating numbers were pretty good in the UK. But Channel 4 seems to be like SyFy and cancelled shows with good ratings. They did it with Hard Sun. They did it with PKD Electric Dream. And now Humans.

    1. AMC did have some say in it because they are partners with Channel 4 on the show. The numbers were down notably on both sides of the Atlantic during the show’s third season, but it sure seems like one more round could have provided a more satisfying conclusion to the story.
