Cancellation Watch Breaking News: YouTube Cancels Origin after One Season, Netflix Renews The Order for Second Year

YouTube quietly cancelled its sci fi series Origin early this week according to Bloomberg. This comes as the streaming service appears to be backing away from scripted programming. According to the financial news site, YouTube has “stopped accepting pitches for expensive scripted shows”. The streamer has denied that it is getting away from original programming, but may be in the process of shifting its model as it plans to do away with the YouTube Premium subscription service and instead make content available for free with ads. Origin was definitely an expensive show to produce and it does not appear to have brought enough attention to the service. I have not seen any viewing stats, but the show has failed to develop much buzz among sci fi fans or the entertainment community in general, though it does hold a 69% Fresh Rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Bloomberg did suggest that the show’s producers will attempt to find it a new home.

Over on Netflix, the horror series The Order has received a second season renewal. That show just debuted on the streaming service earlier this month and has been well-received by critics, currently holding a 100% Fresh Fating on Rotten Tomatoes. I have seen no viewing stats for the show, but it apparently performed well enough to get a quick renewal. The first season consisted of ten episodes and the second should be a similar length.

Origin focuses on a group of people heading to colonize a new planet who wake up from suspended animation to find out the rest of the crew and passengers have abandoned the spaceship and left them behind. It stars Natalia Tena, Tom Felton, Sen Mitsuji, Nora Arnezeder, Fraser James, and Philipp Christopher.

The Order follows a college student who joins a secret society and finds himself thrown into a war between werewolves and those who practice the dark arts. It stars Jake Manley, Sarah Grey, Matt Frewer, Sam Trammell, and Max Martini.

As we head into the final months of the regular season, expect more news as well as renewal and cancellation announcements. Be sure to stay tuned to this site and the Cancelled Sci Fi Twitter Site for breaking news as well as the latest ratings results.
