What Is It? This British-made fantasy series aired on Showtime in the 80’s and delivered a grittier and moodier interpretation of the character than what the audience was used to at that time. Robin of Loxley receives his charge to become the champion of the oppressed from the mysterious figure known as Herne the Hunter. He assembles a band of misfit outlaws, his “merry men”, and proves a constant thorn in the side to the tyrannous Sheriff of Nottingham and his second in command Sir Guy of Gisburne.
Starring: Michael Praed, Judi Trott, Nickolas Grace, Robert Addie, Jason Connery, Mark Ryan
The Skinny: In the mid-80’s when this show debuted on Showtime, there were not too many sci fi offerings on television and even fewer fantasy-based shows. Robin of Sherwood delivered a show with some sword and sorcery elements and also less of the dashing hero portrayal typically expected of the Robin Hood. Of course, this was not a High Fantasy series as no elves or dwarves or dragons made appearances. But it did delivers episodes with elements of magic and mysticism along with others that were straightforward adventures tales. In addition, the show had strong themes driving it that emphasized the importance of justice, loyalty, and dedication that made it more than just a historical fantasy romp. Plus it had an excellent cast and was even able to seamlessly handle of the the departure of Michael Praed as the lead after the second season and replace him with Jason Connery. This one is more of a sleeper series than classic sci fi / fantasy TV, but it is still one that is worth checking out, especially for fantasy fans
All three seasons of the show are available for streaming on the free service Tubi TV. That streamer is much like Hulu in its early years as it runs ads with the shows. Robin of Sherwood is also available on Prime Video if you have Amazon Prime. All three seasons are there as well, but Seasons 2 and 3 are lumped together as one.
