Our ongoing spotlight on sci fi and fantasy shows worth checking out on the streaming services.
What Is It? This series carries on the legacy of the movies and focuses on the immortal Duncan MacLeod (from the same clan as Connor MacLeod) who must face off with others of his kind because “in the end, there can be only one”.
Starring: Adrian Paul, Stan Kirsch, Jim Byrnes, Peter Wingfield
The Skinny: Highlander: The Series carried on the franchise that started on the big screen with Christopher Lambert in the lead role and also made notable changes to its mythos. The series ignored the sequel Highlander II: The Quickening (rightfully so considering how dreadful it was) and also ignored the end of the first film where Connor MacLeod (Spoiler Warning!) becomes the last immortal standing. In the series, there are still plenty of immortals around, seeking each other out for mortal combat. Duncan MacLeod (played by Adrian Paul) becomes the focus of the series, though Connor makes a brief appearance in the beginning.
The first season was rather uneven as the show didn’t really know what it wanted to be about at first. But it started to find itself in its second year (after some cast and location changes) and then really started to build on the Highlander mythology. It ran for six seasons in syndication and even produced the spin-off series Highlander: The Raven which ran for one year. It may not quite count as a classic sci fi show (though I’m sure long-time fans would disagree), but it was a solid genre entry that delivered its fair share of good episodes. And personally, I felt it was the best representative of the franchise which was marred by multiple mediocre to downright awful sequels after it launched.
All six seasons are available on Hulu and Highlander: The Raven is available there as well. It is definitely worth checking out, though be patient through the first season as it got much better in later years.
