What Is It?

This spin-off from the feature film franchise which kicked off in 1986 focuses on the immortal Duncan MacLeod (from the same clan as Connor MacLeod) who must face off with others of his kind because “in the end, there can be only one”.

Aired: Syndication, 1992-1998, 6 Seasons Totaling 119 Episodes

Created By: Davis-Panzer Productions

Starring: Adrian Paul, Stan Kirsch, Amanda Wyss, Jim Byrnes, Peter Wingfield

Why Watch It?

1986’s Highlander starring Christopher Lambert is considered a genre classic, though the many movie sequels that followed proved heavily disappointing, and the 1992 TV series is held in higher regard. The series made some notable changes to its mythos, rightfully ignoring the dreadful sequel Highlander II: The Quickening and also the end of the first film where Connor MacLeod (Spoiler Alert) becomes the last immortal standing. In the series, there are still plenty of immortals around, seeking each other out for mortal combat. Christopher Lambert made an appearance in the pilot before passing the torch to Adrian Paul who plays Duncan.

The first season was rather uneven as the show didn’t really know what it wanted to be about at first. But it started to find itself in its second year (after some cast and location changes) and then really started to build on the Highlander mythology. It ran for six seasons in syndication and even produced the spin-off series Highlander: The Raven which ran for one year. It may not quite count as a classic sci fi show (though I’m sure long-time fans would disagree), but it was a solid genre entry that delivered its fair share of good episodes (read more about the show at this link).

Where Is It Streaming?

All six seasons are available on NBC’s Peacock streaming service. That streamer has a free, ad-supported version that allows limited access to their catalog, as well as two paid tiers that allow full access. All six seasons are also available on the free, ad-supported services Tubi TV, Vudu Free, and FreeVee. Apparently, the pay services have to make some of their content available to the free services in order to secure their distribution deals. Interestingly enough, the spin-off series Highlander: The Raven is not available on Peacock, but you can find it streaming for free (with ads) at The Roku Channel and Freevee.
