Cancellation Watch Breaking News: Timeless Cancelled by NBC but May Get a Two-Hour Finale

NBC announced today that its time travel series Timeless will not be returning for a third season. That show was cancelled following its first season last year after delivering mediocre ratings, but an uproar from the fans prompted the network to uncancel it and give it a ten-episode second season. Unfortunately, the show’s numbers continued to decline into its second year, and the network decided that time had run out. The decision was delayed because NBC was in negotiations with Sony, their partner on the series, which included several other shows. But they were not able to work out a deal on Timeless and the network decided not to move forward with the series. There are talks of producing a two-hour finale to wrap up the show’s storylines, but that has not been firmed up.

Fan support continued to be strong for the show in its second season, though I did not notice the same level of activity after it wrapped up this year (such as re-watch parties and tweet storms) compared to its first season. I expect that the fans will take to the social nets and lobby the streaming services or another network to save the show, especially after Amazon picked up The Expanse, Netflix picked up Lucifer, and NBC picked up Brooklyn Nine-Nine. But apparently Sony was already looking at other venues for the show and did not come up with any interested buyers. At this point, the best bet would be to lobby for the finale, but fans will always try to get the most they can, and perhaps they can find a savior for this show.

Timeless follows a group of experts who go back in time and try to stop a person who has stolen a time machine and is trying to change history. It comes from The Shield‘s Shawn Ryan and Supernatural‘s Erik Kripke and stars Abigail Spencer, Matt Lanter, Malcolm Barrett, and Goran Višnjić.

There are still a few more shows from the regular season awaiting word on their fates such as Superstition, Into the Badlands, and Altered Carbon. Be sure to follow CancelledSciFi.com and the Cancelled Sci Fi Twitter Site for updates and breaking news on these shows and more.
