Cancellation Watch: The Expanse Has Good Season 3 Debut, Outcast May Be Done after Its Second Season

Ratings Results of Interest: The Expanse and Siren See Good Numbers

On Wednesday, Syfy’s The Expanse returned for its third season and posted a 0.21 rating based on same day viewing for the 18-49 demographic with 653K total viewers.  That was below the 0.25 score it had for its second season debut but above last year’s 0.17 average.  If it does not trend down too much from here, than I believe this one will be on target for a fourth season renewal.  In the lead-out hour, Krypton slipped to a 0.25 rating with 873K total viewers, but that one is still performing strong for Syfy and I expect a renewal announcement for it at any time.

On Tuesday, FX’s Legion slipped to a 0.21 rating with 439K total viewers and that one will be going On the Bubble if it does not rebound pretty quickly.  Over on The CW, The Flash returned from several weeks of reruns and posted a series low 0.6 rating with 1.8 million total viewers. The network needs to work out its scheduling better to cut down on these breaks between new episodes.  In the lead-out hour, Black Lightning held steady at a 0.5 rating with 1.5 million total viewers.

On Thursday, Freeform’s new series Siren improved to a 0.25 rating with 683K total viewers for its third episode and that one is looking like a good bet for renewal at this point.  On The CW, both Supernatural and Arrow improved from last week’s lows posting a 0.5 rating with 1.5 million total viewers and a 0.4 rating with 1.1 million total viewers respectively.  Gotham held low as that show’s fate currently seems somewhat murky.  Be sure to follow the Cancelled Sci Fi Twitter Site for the latest results and to stay tuned as we approach the countdown to season end in May.  Ratings Source: ShowBuzzDaily

Cinemax’s Outcast May Be Cast Out after Its Upcoming Season

Cinemax has set July 10th as the premiere date for the second season of its supernatural drama Outcast (based on the Robert Kirkman comic of the same name), which will be over two years after the first season debuted. I know it has become quite common these days for shows to have long hiatuses between seasons, often over a year or more, but the second season of Outcast was actually completed over a year ago and aired internationally starting in April of 2017. Deadline Hollywood talked with network exec Kary Antholis about the show who commented that it is expensive to produce and since they waited so long to air the second season in the U.S., options for the cast members have lapsed. Antholis did say “In success, we left open the possibility that we could have a conversation about figuring out a way to bring it back”. But that hardly sounds like the network is committed to the show. It barely registered in the ratings during its first season, nor did it generate mcuh buzz. At this point it certainly seems that the network has decided to air out the second season and move on to other projects.
