This Week in Sci Fi TV: Galaxina TV Series in the Works, Jon Favreau Joins the Star Wars Universe, and More

Sci Fi TV Development: Galaxina, Hiding in Time, and More

Is the well running dry for sci fi TV ideas?  It would seem to be based on the announcement that Crown International Pictures plans on reviving their B-Movie Galaxina as a television series. That 1980 film parodied Star Wars and Star Trek and the genre in general and developed somewhat of a cult status, though it has gone mostly forgotten since the 80’s. But now its story of the titular space-faring sexy android could continue on television. There is no network attached at this point and the project is very early in the development phase.

MGM Television has picked up the Images Comics series Hiding in Time with plans to adapt it to television. Deadline Hollywood gives the following description of the project:

Hiding in Time, is set in the near future, where time travel has been cracked and the Witness Protection Program begins relocating those who turn in State’s Evidence to various times in history. Abraham Smith is one such witness, relocated to the past, living a life that’s not his own, centuries before he’s even born. When a witness within the Program is murdered anachronistically, a conspiracy is revealed and Abraham’s safety is called into question.

No network is attached at this point, but expect this one to generate some interest.

Syfy has ordered a pilot script for a series based on the Image Comics entry Roche Limit which is described as “a scifi noir series about a human colony founded on a planet that borders a strange space anomaly”. The network will be considering adding that one to its schedule later this year or at some point in 2019.

Jon Favreau Heads to a Galaxy Far, Far Away

We still do not know much about the live-action Star Wars series that Disney is targeting for its streaming service, but we now know who will be heading up the creative side. Jon Favreau has been tapped to write and executive produce the show which will likely debut at some point in 2019. Favreau already has genre cred, having directed the first two Iron Man movies and also having produced and directed the television series Revolution. Once he starts pulling together a team to work on the show, we should get news on what it will be about.

Sci Fi TV Status Report: The Librarians Gets Cancelled, The Magicians Gets Renewed

TNT’a fantasy series The Librarians will not be coming back for a fifth season on that network according to a tweet from the show’s executive producer Dean Devlin. That show’s ratings were down in its fourth year, but the news still comes as somewhat of a surprise.  The Librarians has a very dedicated fanbase that keeps the show trending on Twitter, and its ratings were still okay for a cable series these days.  But the network is going through a period of rebranding, and apparently they decided the veteran show did not fit in as well with their new look (The Last Ship is also rumored to be on the chopping block after its upcoming fifth season).  Devlin has indicated that he will be shopping the show to other venues, and now is the time for fans to support it on the social networks.

Coming as no surprise, Netflix announced this week that Black Mirror has been renewed for a fifth season. I have seen no viewing stats for the show, but it has received much acclaim and is currently considered the gold standard among the recent revival of sci fi and horror anthology shows. No episode count has been announced yet but consider it to be in the range of 6 to 12 (the last two seasons had six eps each). Season 4 of the series premiered right at the end of 2017, so expect the fifth season to have its bow late 2018 or early 2019.

Sci Fi TV Schedule: Channel Zero Has Its Season Finale

Next week Syfy’s season-long horror anthology series Channel Zero (subtitled “Butcher’s Block” in its third year) has its season finale.  Apart from that, it is mostly business as usual for the week, but that means a lot of sci fi and fantasy with over twenty genre shows airing new episodes.  And there is plenty more on the way as we head toward April with the returns for The Expanse, Westworld, and Legion, as well as premieres for Lost in Space and more.  You can see the upcoming shows for Spring and beyond at this link and you can keep up with the weekly listings at this link.
