Cancellation Watch Breaking News: The End is Coming to Once Upon A Time

Word broke today that ABC’s fantasy series Once Upon A Time will be ending after its current season. While the news does not come as a huge surprise, ABC Entertainment President Channing Dungey was talking the show up just last month during the TCAs and claimed the network was “cautiously optimistic” for an eighth season. But now it appears that will not happen and I will have to reconsider the position of Agents of SHIELD, another aging and low-rated show that Dungy seemed optimistic about. According to Deadline Hollywood, Once Upon A Time “will end with” its current season, but considering how late in the year the network made the decision, I will be counting this as a cancellation. This show wrapped up many of its major storylines with its sixth season, and the current year is a reboot of sorts with a cast shake up. The change has not gone over too well with fans, and the ratings are down considerably, even when you take into account its Friday move. It had a successful run, though, with seven seasons and over 150 episodes, and will live on for years in syndication. I also wouldn’t rule out a movie, either a TV reunion or a big screen leap, at some point in the future.

Once Upon A Time follows a multitude of fairy tale characters living in the modern day town of Storybrooke. Included among its many stars are Ginnifer Goodwin, Jennifer Morrison, Lana Parrilla, Josh Dallas, Jared S. Gilmore, and Robert Carlyle. It returns on March 2nd to air its remaining episodes.

As we head into the final months of the season, expect more renewal and cancellation announcements.  Be sure to follow this site as well as the Cancelled Sci Fi Twitter Site for breaking news as well as the latest ratings results.
