Cancellation Watch: A Series of Unfortunate Events to End With S3, Plus Ratings Results

A Series of Unfortunate Events to Wrap Up With Third Season

Netflix’s adaptation of the popular children’s book series (loved by adults as well) A Series of Unfortunate Events will end with its third season, but not because of cancellation. The first season of the show, which streamed last January, covered the first four books in the series and the second season, which debuts March 30th, will cover the next four. That leaves the remaining five of thirteen books for the third season and that will be it for the show. There was some previous speculation that the show might carry on and go beyond the books because it has proven quite popular. But series star Neil Patrick Harris has confirmed that the three year run will be it for the show.

A Series of Unfortunate Events is based on the worldwide best-selling book series of the same name and follows the adventures of three children placed in the custody of their devious uncle Count Olaf who has designs on finding the secret family fortune. It stars Neil Patrick Harris, Patrick Warburton, Malina Weissman, Louis Hynes, and K. Todd Freeman (with Nathan Fillion joining for the second season).

Ratings Results of Interest: The Flash and Black Lightning Improve

The CW’s top-rated superhero shows slipped in the ratings last week, but both saw their numbers improve on Tuesday. The Flash sped up to a 0.9 rating based on same day viewing with 2.6 million total viewers, which is below its season average but still the highest rating for a CW entry. Black Lightning improved to a 0.8 rating with 2.2 million total viewers, matching its debut numbers. Both of these look like locks to return next season for the fifth place network.

On Wednesday, FOX’s The X-Files slipped to a 0.9 rating with 3.6 million total viewers. That show appears to be in its final season, and I’m not sure the network would want it back anyway at these levels. Over on Syfy, Happy! improved slightly to a 0.19 rating with 540K total viewers for its season finale. That one received a renewal announcement from the network earlier this week. The Magicians rebounded from last week’s season low, pulling a 0.28 rating with 669K total viewers. That is currently Syfy’s top-rated show and looks certain to get a fourth season renewal. On Thursday, NBC’s The Good Place had a 1.1 rating with 3.2 million total viewers for its second season finale (based on the preliminary numbers). It has already been renewed for a third season.
