Sci Fi TV Status Report Update: Kevin Probably Won’t Be Saving the World Much Longer

Kevin Probably Did Not Get Enough Episodes: ABC announced yesterday that their new series Kevin (Probably) Saves the World would be getting three additional episodes for its freshman season which is not necessarily good news. Despite Deadline Hollywood considering this a good sign, anything less than an order of nine episodes suggests an unsure future unless a show is rather expensive to produce (likely not the case for this one).  A shortened additional order generally indicates that the network plans on using those episodes to pad out its schedule and likely give the show some kind of resolution so that it plays better in its streaming run. This show actually started out with decent ratings for a difficult hour on ABC’s schedule, but saw those drop off pretty quickly. It did improve slightly this last week from the previous week’s ratings low, but not enough to improve its status. I am moving it to Cancellation Likely status and expect the Cancellation Bear and TV Grim Reaper to do the same next week or just flat out consider the show cancelled.

Ratings Results of Interest: On Monday, FOX’s Lucifer improved to a 1.0 rating based on same day viewing for the 18-49 demographic with 3.5 million total viewers. If that show can hold around those levels, I think it has a decent chance for a fourth season, though that also depends on what sort of deal FOX works out with Warner Bros. In the lead-out hour The Gifted slipped to a 1.0 rating with 3.2 million total viewers. That one has been trending down of late and if it slips much further it could find itself in iffy territory.

On Tuesday, Kevin (Probably) Saves the World improved slightly to a 0.7 rating with 2.9 million total viewers, but as mentioned above, that does not appear to be enough to help it out. On Wednesday, Spike’s The Shannara Chronicles improved a bit to a 0.09 rating with 253K total viewers, but the fact that the network is now doubling up episodes for the rest of the season certainly makes it look like it is in burn-off mode. It appears the quest will be ending soon for that one unless its international partnerships can keep it alive.

On Thursday, Syfy’s Van Helsing slipped to its lowest numbers yet at a 0.10 rating with 303K total viewers and its lead-out Ghost Wars also took a tumble to a 0.06 rating with 324K total viewers. I was thinking that the former series hds a better chance of surviving, but now I’m wondering if Syfy might just do some house cleaning after Fall to make room for all the development it has on the way.  Both shows could definitely use a Call to Action from their fans as could The Shannara Chronicles and Kevin (Probably) Saves the World.
