Cancellation Watch Breaking News: The CW Cancels Frequency After One Season

Leading off what will certainly be a busy week of renewal and cancellation announcements, The CW has cancelled their freshman time travel-themed series Frequency. The news comes as no surprise as that show debuted to tepid ratings last Fall, even for the fifth place network, and those slipped further as it aired its thirteen episode season. The show had a chance to get a late-season boost as it became available on Netflix in February due to the The CW’s deal that the service starts streaming its shows eight days after they have completed their current season. If Frequency had seen a surge a surge on Netflix, The CW might have kept it around for a second season. Apparently that was not the case and the network has now officially cancelled the series.  This is now the second of the broadcast network time travel shows that has been cancelled, following ABC’s Time After Time which was yanked from the schedule in March due to poor ratings.  FOX’s Making History also appears to be head to cancellation and NBC’s Timeless is On the Bubble at the moment, though it is receiving a large show of support from fans on the social nets.

Frequency was based on the 2000 movie of the same name and follows a police officer who talks with her father in the past over an old ham radio. It starred Peyton List, Riley Smith, Devin Kelley, and Mekhi Phifer and was developed for television by Jeremy Carver (Being Human, Supernatural).

Next week the broadcast networks will have their Upfront presentations when they unveil their schedules for the 2017-18 season which means the we can expect plenty of renewal and cancellation announcements over the next seven days or so (you can see the full rundown of this season’s cancellations and renewals at this link).  Be sure to stay tuned to this site and the Cancelled Sci Fi Twitter Site for updates and breaking news.

  1. No! I just found this show on Netflix. Was looking to see when new season would start and found that it was cancelled. I hope Netflix picks it up and takes it as their own

  2. Loved this show but shouldn’t of been on the CW…I think it would of fared better on a different network. Disappointed.
