Cancellation Watch: Westworld Wraps Up Its First Season on a High Note, The Walking Dexit Slows, Plus the Ratings Roundup

Unless otherwise noted, the ratings numbers below are based on the final overnights and may vary slightly from the preliminaries reported on the Cancelled Sci Fi Twitter Site.

westworld-fordSeason Finale: On Sunday, the Westworld season finale pulled a 1.02 rating based on the overnights for the 18-49 demographic with its highest total viewers yet at 2.24 million. With the multiple airings and the HBO Go and Now streaming factored in, the network reported total viewership of 3.6 million on Sunday night. And according to Deadline Hollywood, the series has averaged 12 million viewers across all platforms making it the most watched first season among all of HBO’s original shows.  Westworld has trended up in the ratings for most of its first season (more on that at this link), something which Game of Thrones did as well in its freshman year.  That show continued to trend up each season and ended this last year as HBO’s most-watched of all-time.  So Westworld is definitely off to a good start in its first season with the ratings moving upwards and fans and critics giving the show high marks.

Ratings Results of Interest:  On Sunday, The Walking Dead finally slowed its ratings decline as it improved slightly to a 4.95 rating based on the overnights for the 18-49 demographic with 10.5 million total viewers.  And expect its numbers to improve even further with its Mid-Season finale which will air this coming Sunday.  Then we will have to see if “The Walking Dexit” resumes when the show returns early next year.  Over on TNT, The Librarians slipped just a little bit to a 0.49 rating with 1.9 million total viewers which still count as good numbers considering the competition on the night.  On ABC, Once Upon A Time slipped back to a series low level of a 0.9 rating with 3.3 million total viewers for its Mid-Season finale, and I have to continue to wonder if ABC is starting to consider wrapping that one up this season or next.  On Saturday, BBC America’s Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency improved to a 0.11 rating with 310k tot viewers as it heads into its season finale this week.  It has been renewed for a second season.  On Friday, Syfy’s Z Nation slipped a bit to a 0.21 rating with 740k total viewers, but it learned last week that it will be returning for a fourth season (as expected).  MacGyver and The Exorcist were preempted that night but return this week with new episodes. I previously covered the Monday and Thursday ratings at this link.

Chart Activity: The Walking Dead slipped to Number 3 (down from Number 2) in the Weekly Social Net Rating Top 10. That show remained at Number 1 in the cable Top 25 based on the overnights for the 18-49 demographic and at Number 2 based on total viewers (beat out only by Monday Night Football). Westworld slipped one rung to Number 13 in the cable Top 25 based on the demo. No sci fi shows made it into the broadcast net Top 25 charts for the week.

(Updated for the broadcast network and cable Top 25 chart activity)

Metric Definitions:

Series: (R) indicates a repeat airing

Rating: Overnight rating in the 18-49 demographic for same day viewing based on the final numbers unless otherwise noted

% Chng: The percentage change +/- for this week’s rating vs. last week’s rating (if a new episode aired last week).

Tot Viewers: Estimated total viewers (age 2+) to tune in to the episode for same day viewing.

StD Rating: Season to date average for the rating metric tracked above.

Net Bench (Network Benchmark):  For the broadcast networks, this is the net’s season to date average rating based on the overnights for the 18-49 demographic for non-sports, non-special, non-repeat broadcasts.  For the cable channels, this is the lowest level at which a show is typically renewed by that network if there are enough genre entries on that channel to provide a decent sample.

Cancellation Alert: My prediction of the likelihood that a show will get cancelled. From least to most likely the statuses are Low, Moderate, Medium, Elevated, and High.
