Cancellation Watch: The Last Ship is Picking Up Steam, Killjoys and Dark Matter Slip

Unless otherwise noted, the ratings numbers below are based on the final overnights and may vary slightly from the preliminaries reported on the Cancelled Sci Fi Twitter Site.

the-last-shipRatings Results of Interest: On Sunday, TNT’s The Last Ship improved to the best numbers it has seen in this season as it pulled a 0.62 rating based on the overnights for the 18-49 demographic with 2.5 million total viewers.  The improved numbers are not a huge surprise because it was in the calmest waters it has seen this year.  The show was originally supposed to debut on June 12th, but that got delayed a week due to the Florida shooting incident (the premiere has a scene where gunmen storm into a Vietnamese night club). When it did premiere the next week, it bowed at series low levels, but it had to go up against Game 7 of the NBC finals plus the highly anticipated “Battle of the Bastards” episode on Game of Thrones.  It improved the next week despite airing against the GoT season finale, but then dropped with the episode that aired over the July 4th weekend.  With no major hurdles this past Sunday, The Last Ship posted its best numbers of its thied season and should hopefully have clear waters ahead.  If it can sustain or even improve on its current levels (and it has been seeing decent delayed viewing gains), it should be okay.  But then this is an expensive show to produce and I’m not sure how much international backing it has, so I wouldn’t count it as completely safe just yet.  On Friday, Syfy’s Killjoys slipped a bit to a 0.21 rating with 710k total viewers and Dark Matter dipped to a 0.16 rating with 720k total viewers.  Those are still decent numbers for Syfy these days, though, and these shows are helped by the partnership with the Canadian Space Channel.  I still consider both of these safe for now.  On Tuesday, Zoo held steady with its season debut at a 0.8 rating with five million total viewers.  Those numbers are still down from its first year but may be good enough to keep a Summer entry going these days.  It doesn’t have much leeway for slippage, though.
