Cancellation Watch Breaking News: Syfy Has Cancelled Haven (Brace for the Social Media Fallout)

haven-syfy-cancelledSyfy announced today that the upcoming thirteen episode conclusion to Haven‘s fifth season will act as the swansong for the show.  The news does not come as a complete surprise considering the ratings dive the show experienced last Fall, though I thought they would at least see how the second half of the show’s fifth season would do before making the call.  But with all the development Syfy currently has in the pipeline, they apparently decided not to funnel anymore money to Haven which has struggled in the ratings, though it does have a very devoted and vocal fanbase and I expect them to make waves on the social media sites.  According to series showrunner Gabrielle Stanton, the last thirteen episodes will provide a satisfying resolution for the fans, though they also left it open-ended for a possible continuation:

We approached as if it was going to be our final season, so we were ready for it story-wise. But you never know. If a million people watch, maybe we can do something about that… But we had an idea that it might be [the final season]. I’m sure as a fellow TV fan, there’s nothing more annoying than when a show kind of feels like it might be wrapping up, but they just don’t address it, they don’t come to any kind of satisfying conclusion. I always think that’s cheating the audience a little bit, of a nice satisfying ending. So we really looked at these 13 episodes as if… If we were indeed going to end, what would be the best ending we could possibly do for Haven?

The final thirteen episodes of Haven will begin airing on Thursdays at 10 PM EST starting October 8th.  And sci fi legend William Shatner will be onboard in a recurring role.

  1. I am through! I watched the first four seasons of haven on Netflix because I never knew it was out there due to lack of promotion. I noticed no decline in the quality. Then I started watching five on syfy! They pushed it to a stupid time and then went on hiatus for so long. Hired shatner and then cxled the show BEFORE even airing the episodes. In the last half a year the witches of east end, forever, and now haven have been cxled. Add that to warehouse 13, eureka, and firefly along with the Nielsen ” if you are older than 49 you must be dead and no longer spending money” philosophy and I say what’s the point? I am watching no new shows! None. Don’t really care how good they might be. When haven 5b is over, I am Cxling my cable. Hundred bucks a month for this? Don’t think so!

  2. The problem of course is that the quality of Haven has seriously tanked in the last season or so. I love the show and will be with it until the end but when quality declines to that extent then people will tune out. I’m mostly just happy the show will get a proper ending (and a full 13 episode season, unlike Continuum that only got 6).

But once again we have a great show with a great premise and a fantastic first season slowly degraded due to poor-planning, budget cuts and bad writing. And if you want to see the problem – just look at who wrote the first season and who wrote the first part of season 5.

So as a hardcore fan I’m both disappointed but resigned. At least, unlike Teen Wolf, I won’t be tuning in every week for two more years to yell at my television screen.

  3. I Feel so sad about this, just as you get invested in the town and its folks you stop it all….Far too many have gone the same way…Sanctuary (TV series)..Dark Skies…Stargate …Taken…..Eureka…Alien Nation…V….x 2..!! You do it all the time so whats the point???
