FX announced yesterday that their sci fi / horror series The Strain (co-created by Guillermo del Toro) will be returning for a third season. The news does not come as a big surprise even though the show’s numbers have been down in its second season. It’s off by about 30% from last year, but that is in line with the current ratings slump among the cable networks. And it hasn’t slipped into the “ratings noise” category (0.2 to 0.4 ratings averages based on the overnights for the 18-49 demo), though several shows have been renewed recently with those numbers (Scream, Stitchers, Penny Dreadful, etc.). There is no word on the episode count of the show’s third season, but it will likely be in the 10 to 13 range and it will return to FX’s schedule next Summer. The Strain is currently four episodes into its second season.
