Cancellation Watch: Sleepy Hollow, 12 Monkeys, and Helix Are All Feeling the Pressure of Low Ratings Now

Unless otherwise noted, the ratings numbers below are based on the final overnights and may vary slightly from the preliminaries reported on the Cancelled Sci Fi Twitter Site.

Ratings results for the sci fi / fantasy shows airing Friday Jan 30th thru Monday Feb 2nd (analysis and metric definitions below):

Grimm NBC Fri 1/30 9 PM
Rating: 1.3 | Tot Viewers (MM): 4.9 | StD Rating: 1.3 | Target: 1.2 | Cancellation Alert: Low

Continues to hold steady around this level which should be good enough to earn it a fifth season.

Constantine NBC Fri 1/30 10 PM
Rating: 0.8 | Tot Viewers (MM): 3.3 | StD Rating: 0.9 | Target: 1.1 | Cancellation Alert: High

Its numbers are back down again and its prospects continue to look grim.  (More on this one below)

12 Monkeys Syfy Fri 1/30 9 PM
Rating: 0.3 | Tot Viewers (MM): 0.9 | StD Rating: 0.3 | Target: 0.4 | Cancellation Alert: Moderate

Two weeks in a row at a 0.3 ratings score, that’s not good.  (More on this one below)

Helix Syfy Fri 1/30 10 PM
Rating: 0.2 | Tot Viewers (MM): 0.6 | StD Rating: 0.2 | Target: 0.4 | Cancellation Alert: Moderate

At this level, Syfy is probably wishing they didn’t bother with giving it a second season about now.  (More on this one below)

The Originals CW Mon 2/2 8 PM
Rating: 0.7 | Tot Viewers (MM): 1.5 | StD Rating: 0.6 | Target: 0.7 | Cancellation Alert: Renewed

This series held at a 0.7 rating again.  The CW has to be happy about that.

Gotham FOX Mon 2/2 8 PM
Rating: 1.9 | Tot Viewers (MM): 5.8 | StD Rating: 2.4 | Target: 1.8 | Cancellation Alert: Renewed

Three weeks in a row this show’s numbers have slipped since the renewal was announced.  I don’t expect them to change their mind, but it would be nice if the numbers started edging back up.

Sleepy Hollow FOX Mon 2/2 9 PM
Rating: 1.4 | Tot Viewers (MM): 4.3 | StD Rating: 1.6 | Target: 1.8 | Cancellation Alert: Low

Down is not the right direct for the numbers to go as the season draws to an end (finale is on February 23rd).  (More on this one below)

Sleepy-Hollow-FOX-CancelledOn the Hot Seat:  The ratings returns are continuing to look grim for some shows out there and I am raising the Cancellation Alert on three at this point.  On Monday, FOX’s Sleepy Hollow slipped to a 1.4 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 4.3 million total viewers (based on the preliminaries) and that show is under-performing at a particularly bad time.  Since Fall, itss numbers have been down from its first season, but FOX in general has been struggling and Sleepy Hollow has looked okay in comparison to the other shows on the network.  But it has fallen even further as it is wrapping up its second year, and the network execs tend to pay close attention to how a show closes out its season.  In addition, FOX has expressed some reservations about SH‘s performance this season, so it’s not looked at as the star pupil it once was.  I’m raising the Cancellation Alert on this one to Moderate, though I consider it just marginally at that level for the moment.  If it can finish out its season with improved numbers (a 1.6 based on the overnights or better), then I believe it will be okay (no guarantees, though).  If it stays where it is at now, then the Network Executioner may prove a more formidable villain than the Headless Horseman.

Over on Syfy, that network’s Friday shows continue to struggle.  This past week, 12 Monkeys pulled another 0.3 rating in the 18-49 demo with only 900k total viewers, and Helix remained low at a 0.2 score with 630k total viewers.  I’ve not seen that network renew a show that averaged below a 0.4 rating based on the overnights, and both of these two are currently below that.  Unless their numbers start trending up this week, I don’t see either lasting beyond the current season.  For now, I am raising the Cancellation Alert on 12 Monkeys to Moderate and on Helix to Medium.  Also struggling on Friday is NBC’s Constantine which could only muster a 0.8 rating with 3.3 million total viewers this last week.  That one is still getting plenty of love on the social networks and doing well with delayed viewing results, but I don’t know if that will be enough to help it.  I currently have that show at the highest Cancellation Alert level and I’ll not be changing it.

  1. The Sci Fi channel better renew their shows. The reason for the terrible ratings is nobody watches anything on the channel anymore. They have to start building a fanbase or sell the channel.
