Cancellation Watch: ABC’s Galavant Will Likely Get Cancelled Without Ever Really Getting Cancelled

Unless otherwise noted, the ratings numbers below are based on the final overnights and may vary slightly from the preliminaries reported on the Cancelled Sci Fi Twitter Site.

Ratings results for the sci fi / fantasy shows airing Friday Jan 23rd thru Monday Jan 26th (analysis and metric definitions below):

Grimm NBC Fri 1/23 9 PM
Rating: 1.3 | Tot Viewers (MM): 5.0 | StD Rating: 1.2 | Target: 1.2 | Cancellation Alert: Low

This show improved slightly and is still doing well enough for NBC to keep it around on Fridays.

Constantine NBC Fri 1/23 10 PM
Rating: 0.9 | Tot Viewers (MM): 3.5 | StD Rating: 1.0 | Target: 1.1 | Cancellation Alert: High

It improved from the season low it had the prior week and it made it into the Top 5 for Fridays Daily Nielsen Twitter ratings.  But it still looks like a longshot for this one getting s second season.

12 Monkeys Syfy Fri 1/23 9 PM
Rating: 0.3 | Tot Viewers (MM): 1.1 | StD Rating: 0.4 | Target: 0.4 | Cancellation Alert: Low

That 0.3 rating will not be enough to sustain this series, it needs to get back up to at least the 0.4 level.  (More on this one below)

Helix Syfy Fri 1/23 10 PM
Rating: 0.2 | Tot Viewers (MM): 0.7 | StD Rating: 0.3 | Target: 0.4 | Cancellation Alert: Moderate

No good news here.  A third season seems unlikely at this point.  (More on this one below)

Once Upon A Time ABC Sun 1/25 8 PM
Rating: On Hiatus | Tot Viewers (MM): n/a | StD Rating: 2.6 | Target: 1.8 | Cancellation Alert: Low

On hiatus until March 1st

Galavant ABC Sun 1/25 8 PM
Rating: 1.1 | Tot Viewers (MM): 4.4 | StD Rating: 1.3 | Target: 1.8 | Cancellation Alert: High

It was a fun little show, but now it looks like it will be gallivanting off to TV oblivion.  (More on this one below)

The Librarians TNT Sun 1/25 8 PM
Rating: Season Ended | Tot Viewers (MM): n/a | StD Rating: 0.9 | Target: 1.0 | Cancellation Alert: Low

Season ended, awaiting a renewal announcement.

Resurrection ABC Sun 1/25 9 PM
Rating: 1.0 | Tot Viewers (MM): 3.7 | StD Rating: 1.3 | Target: 1.8 | Cancellation Alert: High

At these levels, don’t be expecting a third season resurrection for this show.  (More on this one below)

The Walking Dead AMC Sun 1/25 9 PM
Rating: On Hiatus | Tot Viewers (MM): n/a | StD Rating: 7.5 | Target: 2.0 | Cancellation Alert: Renewed

On hiatus until February 8th.

The Originals CW Mon 1/26 8 PM
Rating: 0.7 | Tot Viewers (MM): 1.7 | StD Rating: 0.6 | Target: 0.7 | Cancellation Alert: Renewed

This one improved back up to its season high on Monday nights and looks to be holding steady for The CW.

Gotham FOX Mon 1/26 8 PM
Rating: 2.1 | Tot Viewers (MM): 6.0 | StD Rating: 2.4 | Target: 1.8 | Cancellation Alert: Renewed

This one got a renewal notice then saw its numbers sink two weeks in a row.  I expect to see it rebound, though.

Sleepy Hollow FOX Mon 1/26 9 PM
Rating: 1.5 | Tot Viewers (MM): 4.4 | StD Rating: 1.6 | Target: 1.8 | Cancellation Alert: Low

That 1.5 score is a nice rebound from last week’s season low, but it would be even better if it could get back to at least the 1.6 level.

galavant-abc-cancelledOn the Hot Seat: ABC’s mid-season entry Galavant wrapped up its four week “limited run” on Sunday with a slight improvement to its numbers, pulling a 1.1 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 4.4 million total viewers.  That’s too little too late though as this fantasy/musical/comedy saw its numbers plummet after having a decent debut at the beginning of the month.  Based on its season to date average of a 1.3 rating (Once Upon A Time averaged double that in the same hour during the Fall) the network will almost certainly not be inviting this show back to their schedule, though they also will probably never officially cancel it either.  It came in as a limited run series designed as a placeholder for the Sunday 8 PM EST timeslot while Once Upon A Time was on its hiatus (it returns March 1st).  So now ABC just gets to claim that Galavant served its purpose and they will be moving on, allegedly always having considered it a terminal series.  But if the ratings had been better, you know that the network would have been crowing about that and bringing it back next season for another timeshare run on Sundays or even giving it a full season order.  As it is, ABC will probably just confirm the show is not coming back at some point during the upfronts in May (when the networks present their schedules for the next season to the advertisers) and that will be that.  And while it received some decent buzz from fans and critics, I don’t believe it developed a strong enough fanbase to lobby for it to continue.

ABC’s other struggling Sunday show Resurrection also wrapped up its season with a slight improvement, pulling a 1.0 rating with 3.7 million total viewers for its finale.  But its current season to date average is almost half of what it had last year and this show is certainly on the way out as well, especially considering that it squandered the strong lead-in from Once Upon A Time throughout most of the Fall.  Over on Syfy, that network’s Friday entries are underperforming as each dropped for their second episodes of the season.  Freshman series 12 Monkeys slipped to a 0.3 rating with 1.1 million total viewers which has it currently on the verge of bubble status.  The show has been getting some good buzz, though, and the network recently tried to spin its tepid numbers into a win, so I’m not counting it out just yet.  But it needs to get back up to at least a 0.4 score if it wants to last beyond a single season.  Sophomore entry Helix slipped all the way to a 0.2 rating with barely 700k total viewers and looks like it is on its way out.  It was already tenuous coming into the season, and I can’t see Syfy granting it a third year if it remains at these levels.
