Cancellation Watch: Teen Wolf Rises for Season Finale, The Leftovers Drops

Unless otherwise noted, the ratings numbers below are based on the final overnights and may vary slightly from the preliminaries reported on the Cancelled Sci Fi Twitter Site.

Teen-Wolf-CancelledSeason Finales:  The Summer season continues to wind down as two more shows wrapped up over the last few days.  On Sunday, HBO’s The Leftovers had its first season finale and pulled a 0.7 rating with 1.5 million total viewers, which was two ticks lower than its its previous new episode and not a strong finish to the season.  The series has actually pulled mostly tepid number throughout its first year, though HBO did see fit to give the show a second season.  The pay channels are typically more patient with their shows and perhaps the network expects it to build its audience when it returns in 2015.  On Monday, MTV’s Teen Wolf improved its numbers as it finished its fourth season with a 0.8 rating and 1.5 million total viewers.  That is the best ratings score the show has had since mid-July and it will hope to follow that momentum into its fifth season which will bow at some point in 2015.

Following are the full ratings results* for the sci fi / fantasy shows airing Saturday 9/6 thru Monday 9/8 with my comments. And keep an eye on the Cancelled Sci Fi Twitter Site for the latest numbers and any breaking news.

Outlander Starz Sat 9/6 9 PM
Rating: 0.2 | Tot Viewers: 0.95 | StD Rating: n/a | Target: n/a | Cancellation Alert: Renewed

This one grew its total viewers yet again, this time to 950k.  For Starz it has to count as a hit.

Witches of East End LIFE Sun 9/7 9 PM
Rating: 0.4 | Tot Viewers: 1.1 | StD Rating: 0.5 | Target: 0.5 | Cancellation Alert: Low

This show dropped a tick after its one week break.  It is looking at Bubble status if it does not improve next week.

The Leftovers HBO Sun 9/7 10 PM
Rating: 0.7 | Tot Viewers: 1.5 | StD Rating: 0.8 | Target: 1.0 | Cancellation Alert: Renewed

That was not a strong exit for the season, but apparently its network still has confidence in it.

The Strain FX Sun 9/7 10 PM
Rating: 0.9 | Tot Viewers: 1.9 | StD Rating: 1.0 | Target: 1.0 | Cancellation Alert: Renewed

This show stayed at the same 0.9 score as it had on Labor Day weekend.  Maybe it can blame the first Sunday night of NFL football, but I’m betting that The Walking Dead will not be pulling up that excuse when it returns next month.

The Lottery LIFE Sun 9/7 10 PM
Rating: Preempted | Tot Viewers: n/a | StD Rating: n/a | Target: 0.5 | Cancellation Alert: Medium

This one still has almost no ratings pulse.  It may need lottery odds to survive.

Under The Dome CBS Mon 9/8 10 PM
Rating: 1.4 | Tot Viewers: 6.6 | StD Rating: 1.6 | Target: 1.6 | Cancellation Alert: Low

It improved from last week, but not by too much.  Can it rise further for its last two episodes of the season?  It needs to.

Teen Wolf MTV Mon 9/8 7 PM
Rating: 0.8 | Tot Viewers: 1.5 | StD Rating: 0.7 | Target: 0.8 | Cancellation Alert: Renewed

It is up from its season lows and should be okay heading into its fifth season.

*Metric Definitions:

Rating: Overnight rating in the 18-49 demographic for same day viewing based on the final numbers unless otherwise noted

Tot Viewers: Estimated total viewers to tune in to the episode for same day viewing

StD Rating: Season to date average for the rating metric tracked above.

Target: The estimated average rating that the show needs to sustain to get renewed.

Cancellation Alert: My prediction of the likelihood that a show will get cancelled. From least to most likely the statuses are Low, Moderate, Medium, Elevated, and High.
